The Sanya municipal government introduces free school nutrition scheme for students in 146 primary and middle schools in Sanya from September. This will cost around 38 million RMB. The cost of offering a pack of milk and a boiled egg freely for all primary and middle school children would be substantial.
This partial introduction of universal free school nutrition scheme will later extend to more public schools, if more government fund is available.
The considerable cost and the need to involve various governmental departments make it a huge task. But students and parents are pleased that government is making great efforts in this aspect. This year, there are one hundred more schools enjoying this favorable policy and in total, 45363 students are benefited from this program. More schools in suburban and town areas, including some schools on small islands like West Island, are included in the list this year.
The plan – starting from June, 2012 – is the first one in Hainan province aiming to tackle the issue of providing nutritious school meals to more students, especially those from less well-off families. Those school are chosen to take part in pilot schemes to demonstrate how better school food can improve health and educational performance. Children’s health and educational prospects should not be imperiled by lack of nutritious food, according to a government official in charge of this plan.
