A group of volunteers gathered on Saturday, 7th September to pick up trash on the beaches of Yalong bay.

The volunteers, wearing blue silk ribbons and blue T-shirts, promoted the awareness of environmental protection and called for residents to be mindful of marine environmental protection as they cleared trash and debris from the beaches.

Professor Qu from Qiongzhou University said that trash can directly harm sea life such as sea birds and sea turtles. The animals can be choked or poisoned when they become entangled or mistake trash for food.

Many sea turtles die after swallowing trash that they mistake for food, Qu added.

The beach cleanup started on 6th September. As well as the beaches of Yalong bay, the volunteers also picked up trash on beaches of Sanya bay and Dadonghai.

A number of promotion activities for environmental protection were held during the cleanup event.
