Haikou is speeding up its green space expansion initiative, striving to expand its green coverage rate to 43.5% and get its green area per capita to 15 square meters by 2015, according to Haikou’s 2011-2020 urban green space system plan.

The green coverage rate and green area ratio in Haikou’s urban areas is scheduled to reach 41% and 45.5%, respectively, and the green area per capita is scheduled to reach 17.5 square meters by the end of 2020.

Under the plan, the space structure of the urban greenway system will consist of five landscape belts covering the coastal ecological landscape belt in the north and the landscape corridors of the ecological tourism area, urban and central areas, and the agricultural and forestry area in the south.

What’s more, 8 ecological tourism resorts will be built in Haikou to promote the sustainable development of ecology, economy and society. They include the Hainan Tropical Wildlife Park and Botanical Garden, Mission Hills Haikou, Dongzhai Port Nature Reserve, Yangshan Leisure Park, Changying Film Studio Hainan Century City and Haikou Leiqiong World Geological Park
