100 new taxis have recently been added to Sanya’s public transportation system, the Hainan Daily reports.

The new taxis, operated by Sanya Guangda Public Transport Company, are red and orange in color, and easily recognizable.

Sanya has been suffering from a lack of taxis, especially obvious during peak tourism periods. The move is aimed at alleviating this shortage.

According to reports, a further 150 new taxis are also to be added to the city’s public transportation system in mid-September, which will increase the number of taxis in the city to 1534.

Mindful of the growing complaints that many taxi drivers in the city would rather wait at hotels for passengers than drive the streets in the downtown and be hailed by passengers, Zhou Shijun, the general manager of Saya Guangda Public Transport Company, said GPS positioning systems have been installed on the taxis to monitor their daily operation.

Taxi drivers violating regulations will be fined or even fired, Mr.Zhou said.
