Sanya Phoenix International Airport
 
According to an official of Hainan provincial government, the government is planning to build an artificial aviation island in Sanya’s sea area to promote the development of the aviation economy.

The official revealed that the aviation island project site would be in Hongtang Bay, and in the future Sanya would be built into an international aviation hub.

In 2012, the annual passenger throughput of Sanya Phoenix International Airport reached 11 million, hitting 10 million for the first time on December 22, 2011.

Meanwhile, the Hainan government is to invest 13.047 billion yuan into the construction of the second phase project of the Haikou Meilan International Airport from 2013 to 2017.

After its completion, the airport will be able to handle 30 million passengers and 225,000 flights, as well as boast an airport cargo throughput of 300,000 tons.
