As the sweltering 2013 summer progresses, drowning accidents in Sanya's Dadonghai have increased sharply during the summer vacation.

On 4th August, a father drowned after he went to the rescue of his daughter in the sea in Dadonghai.

Shortly after the tragedy, another tourist was reported drowned on 9th August, with another 11 luckily rescued during the same day.

According to the local marine department, strong currents, which are caused by the uniquely rocky and uneven seafloors in Dadonghai, were to blame for most of the drownings.

5 people drowned in same area with many others rescued during the week from 5th August to 12th August 2012, the local marine department said.

The department added that measures had been taken to prevent drowning accidents, including the setting up of safety swimming zones and erection of warning signs in dangerous areas. However, many swimmers simply ignore the warning signs and swim in the dangerous areas.
