More than 80 local villagers gathered under a banyan tree to learn the weaving skills to make Li brocade at Ma Liang village in Sanya’s Yucai town on 6th August, making it the first time Li brocade training courses have been held in a village in Sanya.

The Li training courses, which were jointly organized by the Sanya Non-material Heritage Center and People’s Art Museum of Sanya, aim to promote the preservation and protection of Li ethnic culture as fewer and fewer young local people take the time to learn the ancient weaving technique.

According to Yang Weishen, the curator of the People’s Art Museum of Sanya, experts from the Sanya Non-material Heritage Center and representative Li brocade artisans will be invited to deliver courses which will include the history of Li brocade, weaving, spinning, dyeing and embroidering.

More courses and activities will be launched in the near future to promote Li ethnic traditional culture, says Yang.
