Sanya launches measures to tackle river pollution
Sanya has launched rainwater and sewage diversion reconstruction projects to tackle pollution of rivers across the city, following media reports of heavy pollution in the city’s Linchun River, according to reports.
According to the Land and Environment Resources Bureau of Sanya, sewage is being released into rivers in Sanya due to poor rainwater and sewage diversion systems in the city. Wasted irrigation water and garbage from the upper reaches of rivers is also to blame for the pollution.
According to the local government, reconstruction of the city’s aging rainwater and sewage diversion systems is underway and is expected to be completed by June 2014.
Measures will also be taken to reduce pollution in the rivers by introducing scientific drainage methods for the irrigation water at the upper reaches of the rivers and ways of stopping garbage being dumped into the river, said Ji, an official from the city's environmental protection department.
