The construction of the Hongsha Tunnel, which connects Hongsha and downtown Sanya, is to start in October, according to the Communications & Transportation Bureau of Sanya.

After the completion of the tunnel, the travel time between Hongsha and downtown Sanya will be shortened to 5 minutes.

Yuya Road, which is overwhelmed traffic and often heavily congested during holidays, is currently the main road connecting Hongsha and downtown Sanya.

After completion, the tunnel will greatly ease the traffic pressure on Yuya Road.

The project, with a total investment of 460 million yuan will start construction in October 2013 and is expected to be completed in 2014.
