Sanya Marine Bureau warns about drowning accidents
With the summer swimming season just around the corner, tourists are being warned of the risks posed by strong currents after a series of drowning accidents which have occurred in Sanya.
The Sanya Marine Bureau has recently released a safety alert highlighting the dangers of rip currents in a number of sea areas across Sanya, which are to blame for most of the drowning accidents.
According to Statistics from the Sanya Maritime Rescue Center, In the first half of 2013, there were 5 maritime drowning in Sanya. On 17th July, one 10-year-old girl was reported drowned in waters near Sanya Yalong Bay
In 2012, Sanya reported a total of 11 drowning accidents at sea, with 5 drowned, 4 missing, and 8 rescued.
On 11st August 2012, a dentist drowned after being swept out to sea when he went to the rescue of two kids. The accident was caused by strong currents.
According to Liu Zhongxue, an official from the Sanya Marine Bureau, the majority of drowning accidents were caused by swimmers’ negligence and a lack of relevant safety knowledge.
The Sanya Marine Bureau warned parents to watch their children at all times around sea areas and advised swimmers to choose the right time and take protective measures before swimming in the sea areas.
