According to the Housing and Urban-Rural Development Bureau of Sanya, average house prices in Sanya were RMB23,441 per square meter in the first half of 2013, a 4% decline compared to the same period of last year.

However, house sales hit a record high of 865,000 square meters, a year-on-year increase of 76.32%.

According to Liu Shuguo, the secretary general of the Sanya Real estate Association, the sharp growth in house sales was owing to effective governmental housing administrative measures and the city's marketing led by the government and real estate enterprises.

Hazy weather in northern China also contributed to the growth in house sales, as many house-buyers were attracted by Sanya’s nice weather and clean air.

More than 85% of house-buyers were from resource-abundant areas such as Beijing, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and north-eastern China, according to Liu.
