2013 Sanya Cultural Heritage Day kicks off on June 8th
This year marked the 8th Cultural Heritage Day since 2006, when the State Department passed a law strengthening culture heritage protection and decided to set up a Chinese Culture Heritage Day to fall on the second Saturday every June.
Besides, the day is also the 10th anniversary of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Blessed with rich cultural heritage resources, Sanya has its own unique cultural characteristics such as Tianya culture, historical culture and marine culture.
Since 2005 the Sanya government has started to rescue and set up documenting systems and databases recording folk literature, music, dance, traditional handicrafts and folk customs. And they formally established the Sanya Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center last March.
Sanya now has two national intangible cultural heritage items including the firewood gathering dance and folk song of the Yazhou, seven provincial intangible cultural heritage projects including the traditional Li potting technique and one municipal intangible cultural heritage project, the getting fire by drilling into wood project.
