A searing heat wave that has scorched Sanya has nudged the city’s electricity generation to its highest ever level, touching 4.51 billion kilowatts as of May 23, according to data from the Sanya Power Dispatch and Communication Center.

The figure was 15.18% higher than the past record and also exceeded 4.4 billion kw, the maximum capacity which was expected this year.

Affected by the consistently high temperature in recent days across the city, sweltering residents have switched on their air conditioners en masse, which is the main cause of the rising consumption in the summer.

Power grid companies are strengthening monitoring and forecasting of increases in electricity demand and making better power distribution plans to avoid power shortages this summer.
