Blackpool seeks to twin with Sanya to boost tourist business

TOURIST chiefs in Blackpool are hoping to boost business by twinning with an exotic beach resort in China.
Top of the council’s wish list is the tropical haven of Sanya on the Chinese island of Hainan.
Council leader Simon Blackburn admitted the town is looking to the east as it spends less on links with its twin town of Bottrop in Germany.
He said talks had started between the council and the Chinese Consul General, based in Manchester, but stressed any such connection would have to be set up at no cost to the Lancashire resort’s taxpayers.
Mr Blackburn added: “Following conversations with the Chinese Consul General, we want to further explore links with China.
“There are huge potential benefits in terms of tourism and industry but this could only proceed if it was at absolutely no cost to the taxpayer.”
The idea of a link between the resort and China was originally touted by the Blackpool Chinese Community Association.
Its chairman, Peter Liu, earmarked Sanya. He said: “It’s a very popular and quite modern resort in China.
“Sanya seems like a lot of Chinese cities which are being regenerated to accommodate the newfound wealth in the country.
“Blackpool has spent millions regenerating itself and maybe there are lessons to be learned from each other.
“From a cultural point of view there would be a lot of benefits and, business-wise, there must be something we can learn too.”
That aside, the idea of a link is an intriguing one…if only the two resorts had more in common, see right.
