As of April 20th, 2013, the Sanya Duty Free Shop has received a total of 6.65 million visitors since the implementation of the duty free policy on April 20th, 2011.

During the two years after the implementation of the duty free policy, the Sanya Duty Free Shop, which has a business area of 8,000 square meters, receives over 11,000 visitors a day on average and has become an extremely popular shopping destination for tourists during their stay in Sanya.

In order to further boost local tourism, Hainan implemented a new duty-free policy with the purchase limit increased from 5,000 to 8,000 yuan on November 1st 2012. Three kinds of duty-free goods including beauty products & healthcare equipment, Kitchenware & Tableware and toys were included amongst tax-rebate eligible items.

Moreover, the updated scheme has also lowered the age threshold for duty-free purchasing from 18 years old to 16 years old.

In addition, customers buying watches worth over 8,000 yuan at Sanya Duty Free Shop can be entitled to a 50% to 80% reduction on their postal taxes, with items worth over 8,000 yuan granting a 100% reduction from April 1st to 30th.
