Recently, the World Bridge Federation announced the selection of Sanya as a candidate city to host the 2014 World Bridge Series Championships and will arrange a group head for Sanya to investigate the possibility of hosting the event.

The selection marks the start of the world’s greatest card game’s introduction to another country, after it has previously only been held in Europe and the USA.

The World Bridge Championships consists of several sets of championships including World Open Knockout Teams, World Mixed Swiss Teams, World Mixed Pairs, World Open Pairs, World Women's Pairs and so on.

Most of the world championship events are open in the sense that entries do not represent geographic zones or nations.
