Haikou Meilan International Airport is seeing an upsurge in passenger traffic and flights during the 3-day May Day holiday.

The airport is expected to handle 731 flights and the number of passengers is expected to hit 96,000 during the holiday, up 7.34% and 11.7%, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

Haikou airport has seen steady growth thanks to the construction of the Hainan international tourism island and the government’s subsidy policy to boost the airline industry.

In the first four months of this year, the passenger throughput of the airport reached 5.45 million yuan, a 20% increase over the same period of 2013.

Meanwhile, the Haikou airport will continue to see a boom in passenger numbers as several airlines companies start to incrementally resume and expand their air network during the summer and autumn seasons.

Starting from May, Tianjin Airlines will resume flights from Haikou-Zhanjiang-Kunming and open the Haikou-Zhanjiang-Jieyang and Novosibirsk-Haikou-Nha Trang air services.
