A week-long activity to call for public care and protection of birds kicked off in Sanya on March 20.

The week-long period from March 20 to 26 is the 'Love Birds Week' in Hainan province. The week-long activity will help the public gain more knowledge of the living habitats of birds and increase their awareness of the need to protect birds.

During the event, the Sanya government educated the public by spreading the idea that good treatment of animals benefits human beings through various promotional campaigns and launched a crackdown on illegal bird-hunting and related businesses.

Sanya is home to 50 species of bird including night herons, Chinese pond-herons, great egrets, grey herons and greenshanks, and is also a habitat for more than 100 species during their winter migration.
