Sanya ranked first among China’s top ten popular domestic tourist destination cities for independent travel during this year’s Spring Festival holiday, according to a ranking list jointly compiled by China's well-known travel website ctrip.com and the China Tourism Research Institute.

Second only to Sanya on the list, Xiamen is followed by Beijing, Lijiang, Chengdu, Guilin, Guangzhou, Harbin, Xi’an and Shanghai.

The list showed that coastal cities have become one of the most popular kinds of destinations for domestic tourists who spend their Spring Festival Golden Week holidays travelling. It also revealed that independent travel is becoming increasingly popular. According to the list, over 50% tourists prefer independent travel to package tours as it gives them more freedom to choose their flights, hotels and destinations.

This year’s Spring Festival Golden Week holiday also saw an increase of over 50% in the number of outbound tourists, and Southeast Asian countries, especially Thailand which saw a rise of over 100%, were their main destinations.
