The air quality in Haikou ranked third best among 74 major cities in China in January 2014, according to a recent report published by China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection.

According to the list, the top 10 cities with the best air quality last month were: Lhasa, Zhoushan, Haikou, Kunming, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Huizhou and Zhongshan.

The top 10 cities with the worst air quality in China were: Xingtai, Shijiazhuang, Baoding, Handan, Hengshui, Jinan, Tangshan, Chengdu, Xi’an and Wuhan.

Haikou’s air quality index for more than 80% of the days in January reached national air quality standards.

The ministry began publishing a monthly red and black list of the air quality of the 74 major cities in China in 2013 in an effort to force local governments to pay more attention to the increasingly serious air pollution problem in China.
