Haikou metro system to start construction
Recently traffic conditions in Haikou have deteriorated seriously, to the point that traffic volumes on major Haikou streets are 1.5 times as heavy as those of main Shanghai streets. Measures to improve road quality and capacity are being put into place in order to reduce traffic congestion, as well as implement stricter controls on vehicle operation in the province.
In addition, Haikou city is in the initial stages of planning a metro system, which is expected to begin construction in the coming year. Line 1 (Binhai) is to stretch from the Train Station to Baishamen Park in Haidian Island, passing through Yuehai, Changdi, and Renmin Ave. In the second phase of construction a line will also be built from Baishamen Park to Meilan Airport. The metro will cover a distance of 27.3 kilometers, with 39 stops. The average distance between stops will be 686 meters. The first metro line is expected to open in late 2015.
A bus rapid transit system is also in the works for the Haixiu Road area. Together, these new transportation measures and methods are expected to improve traffic conditions in Haikou considerably.
