China isn't exactly synonymous with poker, but that is set to change in just a few weeks' time, as the World Poker Tour is set to host the first-ever WPT China event.

Set to run from December 14th – 17th, the inaugural World Poker Tour event in China is officially titled the "WPT National China Poker Tournament: Sanya". Taking place on the tropical beaches of Sanya, Hainan Island, China, the WPT’s first visit to China is set to be a fun adventure for all players to remember.

“WPT National China Poker Tournament: Sanya demonstrates the exploding popularity of WPT National and Regional events,” says WPT CEO Steve Heller. “This provides players around the world with the opportunity to compete in affordable, world-class poker tournaments.”

Poker in China and around Asia is clearly one of the huge growth points for poker around the world and that has been witnessed firsthand in Macau. It will be very interesting to see just how many players this inaugural WPT tournament can draw.

“We are very excited about the potential of this tournament as there are thousands of players in China who aren’t able to play in large tournaments such as this without having to deal with the expense and hassle of traveling out of the country,” Heller added.

“WPT National China Tournament Sanya is filling a void in the Chinese poker community, and we hope this will be the first of many similar events World Poker Tour will hold in China in coming seasons.”

Not only are players in China set to be provided with an affordable, world-class poker tournament, they are also going to be staying at the beautiful MGM Grand Sanya Resort. The location speaks for itself, with the resort being one of the most luxurious spas in China. Just as much a holiday as a poker tournament, the resort features world class dining options, poolside partying and live DJ events.

The Main Event is set to take place over three days and interestingly, due to government laws; the event is only open to local players and a limited amount of international players. Players from abroad will have to be “invited” to take place in the event, with more information on APT National China Poker Tournament: Sanya found here.

Technically running as a US$1,500 “Invitational Entry” event, it is expected that the event could create a prize pool of US$650,000. Some of the notable players who have already confirmed their attendance include Jacky Wang, Jay Tan, Raidan Kan and Hong-Kong based Aussie, David Steicke.

With 12 events being run including the Main Event, there will be plenty of poker action to keep poker players in China and a select few from around the world happy. Poker Asia Pacific will watch on with anticipation to see just how successful this event will be. Be sure to return to find out all the poker news from China and this new WPT initiative.
