A new policy regarding public parking charges will be put into effect on January 1st, 2013, in order to reduce the traffic jams in downtown Sanya, according to relevant departments.

Preliminary preparation work is now under way. Major road sections and streets including Shangping Street Avenue and Hedong Road have been marked with numbers for parking.

Sanya is facing serious challenges because of the rapid growth of its population and the numbers of vehicles in the city. The plan to introduce the public parking charge in the city centre will help ease its crowded roads to some extent, said the city’s enforcement officers.

This latest effort has been widely accepted by local residents and tourists. Mr. Liang, a tourist from Jinan said the implementation of a public parking charge will allow for the effective use of public resources, especially during the high season.

The new method has become a convenient and economical way to control city traffic. The system is also commonly used in many other modern cities nationwide.
