The Sanya municipal government recently issued a notice stating that the Sanya First Market is to undergo demolition and reconstruction. The entire project will take up 11,000 square meters of land, with the resettlement of a residential area occupying 30,000 square meters.

Many tourists can simply head to the streets around the First Market to get an instant hit of Sanya’s unique cultural mix, the bustling streets and colorful market stalls are full of produce from the surrounding farm lands and fresh seafood from the South China Sea. It’s a lively place with traders and shoppers striking deals and the odd tourist trying to take it all in.

In 2005 the market closed temporarily for a simple redecoration, and a comprehensive reconstruction was carried out at the end of 2007. But as the market has now become a major tourist destination, it is often packed with visitors. Easing the burden of the market should be the priority.

After reconstruction the market will feature pedestrian streets, supermarkets and parking lots. 820 parking spaces will also be provided. The city plans to start the first phase of the construction on two 29-story tower buildings and their annexes. The market will be able to stay in operation as the first phase project proceeds. During the second phase the market will be demolished and all the stores will relocate to the annexes. When the third phase of construction beings, the key emphasis of the project will be to develop and build the parking building.
