The 9th Sanya municipal government executive meeting was held on October 16th. During the meeting a regulation was passed regarding the use of electric bicycles in the city.

According to the new regulation, electric bicycles (including its battery but not the rider) must not be heavier than 40 kilograms and can only travel at a maximum speed of 20 km per hour. If drivers purchase such electric bicycles before the implementation of the regulation, they should apply for vehicle registration within 90 days, while those vehicles purchased after the date of implementation are required to be registered within 30 days. The traffic police detachment of Sanya municipal public security bureau will issue vehicle registration certificates as soon as the applications are approved.

In addition to this, no removal or alteration of safety components on the electric bicycles are allowed based on this regulation. The bicycle riders are expected to apply for a registration for any vehicle modifications.

It was also stipulated that drivers must be at least 16 years old and they should carry their registration certificates whenever use their electric bicycles. They are not allowed to carry more than one person and the height of objects carried on the bikes cannot be more than 1.5m, measured from the ground. As well as this, riding electric bicycles while drunk will also be made illegal.
