A preliminary review meeting for the 2nd phase of Haikou Meilan International Airport expansion project was held on October 11th. Officials from relevant governments attended the meeting.

According to reports, with the increasing number of tourists in the last few years, the aircraft industry in Hainan has got a new chance for development. As one of the top ten busiest civil airports in China, Haikou Meilan International Airport has had an amazing growth of 13% in its annual passenger handling capacity. It is capable of serving 9,300,000 passengers every year, with 4,016 per hour at its peak.

However, airlines have also been severely tested in these days as Hainan deepens the construction of an international tourism island. Therefore, it is quite essential to put the 2nd phase of the airport expansion into operation.

The airport expansion is designed to handle 30 million passengers and 300,000 tons of cargo and mail in 2020. With a total investment of RMB 13.4 billion, the project mainly includes a 3,600 meter long runway and its corresponding taxiway system, a new terminal covering 290,000 square meters and the matching aircraft parking aprons, parking garage, aviation gas station and other support facilities.

When completed, it will effectively relieve the growing pressure on the province’s air transport and facilitate the healthy and fast development of civil aviation in Hainan, as well as lay a solid foundation for the local economic and social development.
