Sanya to phase out motorbikes and promote use of registered e-bikes
In order to improve traffic conditions in the city, the Sanya government recently passed a policy limiting the use of motorbikes and encouraging the registration of e-bikes.
According to the policy, no motorbikes or motor tricycles, except ones owned by state organs, can be driven in 4 areas and 4 road sections of Sanya. Restricted areas include parts of the CBD, Sanya Bay, Dadonghai and the railway station, while the restricted road sections are in Sanya Bay, Yingbin Road, Yuya Avenue and Phoenix Waterside Town on Hedong Road. Any motorbike that goes into these places will be punished.
At the same time, e-bikes will need to be properly registered. It is believed that there are around 1.65 million electric e-bikes in Sanya; with 1.2 million of them downtown. However only 10% of this number are properly registered and checked. In addition, e-bikes with a maximum speed of between 20 and 50km per hour, over 50km per hour, or with an internal-combustion engine displacement over 50ML, will be categorized as motor vehicles.
The punishment for motor vehicles and non-motor vehicles will be different. A buy-back and trade-in program for unregistered and unchecked e-bikes will be launched to gradually eliminate them from downtown areas.
