A new fair-price vegetable supermarket opened for business on 9th October in Sanya. The price of fruit and vegetables in the supermarket was roughly 3 yuan/kg cheaper than the market price, which has attracted a great number of customers.

According to one salesperson who works at the supermarket, they sold 396 kg of vegetables and 500 kg of fruits between 8:30 and 11:00 on the opening day. The sale price of fruits and vegetables in the supermarket was about 30% cheaper than the market rates.

In recent years Sanya has put forward a set of proposals in order to relax the short vegetable supply, called simply, “Vegetable Basket Project”. By rationalizing prices of non-stable foodstuff and with systems available, the project aims to improve the production and circulation system and exploit national resources at a more reasonable rate. It would readjust the unstable food structure, popularize practical techniques, strengthen the construction of infrastructure and increase the unstable food level in a progressive fashion.

In the future, Sanya will continue to focus on the “vegetable basket” project implementation. Efforts will be made to promote the production of fruits and vegetables and to keep the price stable. Distribution costs will also be reduced and price control regulations strengthened.
