When building officials in China turn you down flat for planning permission – they really mean flat.

So when this unauthorised 13-storey block of flats lost its final appeal in Sanya, Hainan province, a team of demolition experts razed it to the ground within hours.

Locals had hired builders to quickly construct the tower block before planners knew what was happening.

Despite having no water mains or electricity, the 460 residents got by with wells and generators.

"They were very popular because they were very cheap, but the reason why they were so cheap was because they were very also dangerous and had to go," said one official.
