This month diners in Sanya will begin seeing smile-coded placards in restaurants to signify how the eateries ranked with inspectors on food safety conditions and services.

Starting in June, the first batch of 50 piloted catering enterprises including the restaurants at the scenic spots and school cafeterias have been inspected by the Sanya food and drug administration to evaluate the restaurant's cleanliness and services.

After the rating, the catering enterprises will be issued smile-coded placards bearing a big smile, small smile, and ordinary face accordingly.

According to the authorities, the ratings will help to establish rules designed encourage the restaurant owners and managers to perfect and improve quality of services rendered to local residents and tourists
