Sanya sees 114 cruise ships visiting in Jan-May, ranks 1st in China
Statistics from the Sanya Port Administration show that more than 114 cruise ships docked, bringing more than 80,000 passengers in the first five months of this year. The numbers of cruise ships and passengers have both surpassed those of last year. It’s estimated that the total number of cruise ships visiting Sanya will hit 172 in 2012.
Sanya has made great efforts in developing its cruise economy over the years. Since the Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Terminal was put into operation in 2007, 17 international luxury cruises have made their maiden voyages to Sanya. It has become the most flourishing cruise terminal in China having seen 474 luxury cruise ships visit, bringing 550,000 high-end tourists to Sanya.
According to Zen Xianyun, the chief executive of the Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Homeport Development Corporation, the Sanya Phoenix Island International Cruise Homeport lead China in the number of cruise ships and passengers in 2008, and it ranks the first again this year.
The director of the Sanya Port Office Zuo Zheng said the total number of cruise passengers in Sanya from 2011 to 2015 will exceed 1 million. Zuo showed great confidence in Sanya’s cruise industry and believes that a bright and promising future lies ahead.
