Photo & video exhibition reveals 2 US men’s adventures in Hainan 75 years ago
A rare collection of photographs and videos taken on Hainan Island by two US explorers, adventurers Nicol Smith and Leonard Clark, 75 years ago has been opened to the public at the Hainan Museum in Haikou.
The series of 110 photographs and a 37-minute video recorded the traditional life of ethnic Li people: tattoos on the faces of women, their clothing, boat-shaped houses and anti-Japanese fighters holding home-made guns.
"The city reminds me of the Cuban capital Havana," Nicol Smith wrote down in his journal on June 26th, 1937, when he and his companion arrived in Haikou after their boat trip from San Francisco.

During their two-month exploration into the interior of the island, the duo wandered through Zhanzhou, Limu Moutain, Baisha, Baoting and Wuzhishan Mountain.
The collection was presented by Australian former teacher Brandon Valle. They are a precious record of what the traditional Li people lifestyle was like before Hainan Island was occupied by Japanese invaders between 1939 and 1945.
