Team Sanya skipper Mike Sanderson answers top 10 questions on Volvo race
Finding the gains: Team Sanya skipper Mike Sanderson
In the fifth of a six part series, Mike Sanderson, of Chinese entry Sanya, tackles our ’10 questions for skippers’.
Funniest Volvo Ocean Race moment so far?
We haven’t had too many funny moments, but hearing fellow Kiwi Grant Dalton [Team New Zealand boss, below] yelling at Camper from the chase boat when they were last round the mark during the practice race in Sanya was priceless.
Best aspect of the race so far?
The quality of the teams considering the global recession is amazing. Shows real commitment by sponsors to the sport and the Race itself.
Most awkward moment?
Being in Abu Dhabi without a boat and a team – it was awful. I didn’t want to be there, I wasn’t proud that we had had another issue in the race.
Top songs on the boat Ipod
Eye of the Tiger – Survivor
November Rain – Guns and Roses
Time to stand up and be counted – The Feelers (below)

The thing you least like doing on the boat?
Changing to the storm jib because it means you are in very bad and horrible conditions.
Who is the most irritating member of your crew and why?
Jared Henderson (below). He is one of my oldest friends in sailing but gives everyone heaps of grief in a highly entertaining way.
What do you do to relax on board?
Read a sched report where we have gained – that is the only thing that relaxes me.
The Volvo route I would most like to race?
The traditional round the world route of 96-97 is the best but I’m also enjoying coming to these new places. If it made no difference to sponsors, I would love to stick with traditional route.
The best thing about these boats are …?
They are the ultimate offshore monohulls. The speeds they achieve are a freak of physics. Incredibly enjoyable to sail even in 10 knots of wind.
Nicest surprise?
Being sent a picture of my kids playing on the beach that was totally up to date.
