Volunteers pick up rubbish on the beach.
On 2nd June, an environmental protection campaign was jointly launched by Sanya Blue Ocean Protection Association and the Sanya government ahead of the World Environment Day and World Ocean Day. More than 1,000 volunteers joined in the campaign, calling for environmental protection with their down-to-earth actions in Sanya.
These volunteers mainly came from Sanya universities, Sanya Blue Ocean Protection Association, cadres and soldiers stationed in Sanya. Wearing white T-shirt with logos of BOPA, the volunteers showed up in the main roads, airport, bus stations and rivers in Sanya. They called for the citizens to pay more attentions to the ocean environment and environmental protection by whitewashing trees, cleaning rivers and garbage in the sea, propagandizing environmental protection knowledge.
According to Sun Dong, the secretary-general of Blue Ocean Protection Association, the association has carried out a series of activities on ocean protection since the establishment of BOPA on 1st June, 2007. Over the past 5 years, the number of BOPA members has climbed to 500,000. Apart from Hainan, BOPA is also influential in the costal cities as well as inland cities.
