Affected by the traditional off-season in Hainan, which usually starts from April to September, the hotel occupancy rate in Sanya has dropped to 30% at present.

Hainan received nearly 8.35 million domestic overnight tourists in the first quarter of this year, up 10% year-on-year, but the growing rate is lower than the average 15%.

The inbound tourism market was stable while the outbound tourism has cooled down in Hainan. The rate of major overseas tourists from Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia and South Korea fell dramatically.

According to the industry insiders, 3 reasons are blamed for the tourism downturn in Hainan. Firstly, the tourist rip-off at the seafood restaurants in Sanya has a negative influence on Sanya's tourism market. Secondly, overseas tourism market was affected by the Europe’s debt crisis and the RMB exchange rate. Thirdly, the comprehensive tourism power in Hainan is not competitive enough.

The Hainan tourism industry calls for more exchange and cooperation among the industry, and promote new tourist routes to attract more "off-season” tourists to Hainan.
