Sanya red mangrove-planting activity
The red mangrove planting activity organized jointly by the Blue Ribbon Ocean Conservation Association and Sanya Communist Youth League was held on 6th May at the upstream of the Sanya River.
Over 100 volunteers took part in the activity and a total of 1,500 red mangroves were planted.
Xie Yongfei, a volunteer of Blue Ribbon, told a reporter that the meaning of the activity is to let more people know environmental protection lies in actions not slogans. Zhou Yu, an official of the Sanya Local Taxation Bureau, said he hoped this activity could call for more people to protect the mother river of Sanya.
The red mangrove is one of the important defensive lines which are significant to the costal lines. However, with the development of Hainan’s economy, the red mangrove are declining year by year. The total red mangrove area has decreased by 60% in the past 5 decades.
According to a survey conducted by the Hainan Ocean Bureau, there are 8 red mangrove natural reserves with a total area of 3000 hectares nowadays. But, in the 1950s, the total red mangrove area hit 1000 hectares.
The red mangrove-planting activity aims to call for more citizens to join in the public welfare works, contributing to the environmental protection and ecological environment construction, said the president of the Blue Ribbon Association.
