Haikou topped a list of 74 major cities in China with the best air quality in July, according to the monthly air quality report for July released by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

The readings released indicated that about 29.3 percent of the days on average in July saw air pollution in the 74 major cities, with 21.1 percent of the days suffering light pollution, 6.5 percent medium pollution, and 1.7 percent heavy pollution.

The number of days with heavy pollution and severe pollution dropped by 3.2 percent and 0.4 percent respectively.

17 out of the 74 cities reported that more than 50 percent of days in July failed to meet standards, with the primary pollutants being ozone and PM2.5, or dangerous airborne particles measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter.

The top ten cities with good air quality in July were Haikou, Zhuhai, Guiyang, Yinchuan, Zhongshan, Kunming, Huizhou, Nanning, Shenzhen and Fuzhou.
