Passenger throughput of Sanya Airport ranks 18th in China in 2011
The passenger throughput of the Sanya Phoenix International Airport topped 10 million in 2011, reaching 10.36 million, and was ranked No.18 among 178 civil airports in China.
The Sanya Phoenix Int’l Airport started construction in 1990 and was officially put into operation in April 1994 with a planned throughput of 1.5 million. At that time, the facilities in the airport were very simple and the airport transported few tourists in the first few years.
In 2003, the 53th Miss World Contest was held in Sanya, which largely promoted the name of Sanya, leading to a tourist upsurge.
In order to meet the demand of the increase in tourists, the Sanya Phoenix Int’l Airport launched Phase I and Phase II expansion projects in 2006 and 2007.
At present, the Sanya Phoenix Int’l Airport is going to carry out a Phase III expansion project. A 300,000-square-meter airport terminal, a new landing field, and some supporting facilities will be set up in the airport.
After construction, the passenger throughput of the Sanya Phoenix Int’l Airport will reach 15 million to 20 million.
