Apart from the increasing popularity of the Hainan Offshore Duty-free policy among Chinese mainland tourists, the duty free shops in Sanya and Haikou also have received more than 10 thousand island visitors, said the Haikou Custom authority.

As of Feb. 20, the Sanya duty free shop received 5,735 visitors with sales of 11.3 million yuan in the past ten months and the number of tourists visiting the store in Haikou reached 5,074 and sales hit 5.06 million yuan even though the store has only operated for two months. The number of tourists visiting Haikou was 4.4 times more than that of Sanya.

Haikou Custom officials said the Sanya duty free shop is much preferred by domestic tourists while island residents who purchase duty-free items mainly concentrate in the shop at Meilan International Airport Haikou as shoppers can receive their purchases immediately.

Among the imported items, cosmetics, perfume, big-name watches and candies are the main purchases by island residents.

According to the offshore duty-free policy, Hainan residents are permitted one additional shopping trip while domestic visitors are allowed to make two duty-free shopping trips a year.
