Increasing seniors bring burden to bus operators in Sanya winter season
The increasing number of seniors traveling free by public buses during the winter season has caused much burden to the city’s bus operators, reports 0898.net.
Bus No.2 is the busiest route associated with increased use of public transport among old people. At present, there are 40 vehicles running on the city route. The bus company feels great operating pressure as more old residents use free bus travel.
“Every day, each bus has to transport over 200 elderly people, which means over 8,000 elderly will use the public transport without charge”, said person with Bus No.2.
With the approaching of the winter season, many elderly people from northern China fly to Sanya and make up the growing number of public transportation users.
According to the local transportation policy, seniors from other provinces and living in Hainan for more than 1 year can enjoy special public transport treatment and become entitled to free travel on local buses. Since 2007, over 22,000 old people have registered in Sanya.
