According to the Haikou Planning Department, the renovation plans for buildings on Haikou’s North Bo’ai Street have been divided into four distinct plans: historical arcade (qilou) buildings, Cultural Revolution period buildings, newly constructed arcade style buildings, and non-arcade style buildings. Each style will be restored in a different way.

Recently, Haikou’s arcade building management department met with specialists to formulate renovation plans. Haikou Tourism and Culture Investment Holding Group Co., Ltd. has consulted with experts and submitted renovation plans to the planning department for review. Currently they are seeking opinions and suggestions from the public, as well as the building owners.

Historical arcade style buildings, due to their unique characteristics, will be preserved in their entirety. Their simple style conveys a sense of their age and the great changes of time. They will be preserved including stains, so as not to damage them further, or change their ancient color. The walls, doors, and windows will be repaired and waterproofed, but not painted or re-plastered extensively. In the case of severely damaged or already altered historical arcade style buildings, damaged areas will be restored. At the time of renovation, important areas will be restored, including rebuilding, plastering, and waterproofing damaged sections of walls. Windows and doors will also be restored to their original styles.

The Cultural Revolution era buildings will also be kept relatively intact, with the original window style to preserve the unique style of the period.
