Sanya strives to become a main shopping and tourism city
Sanya, a famous tourist city in the southernmost of China, intends to be one of the main shopping and tourism cities in China. The city is preparing to attract tourists with increasing shopping products to stimulate consumption in return for development of the local tourism industry and other related services.
Statistics from the commence bureau showed that the turnover of social retail sales consumption has increased to 6.6 billion yuan last year. With the stability and growing speed, by 2015, the figure is expected to hit 10 billion yuan.
“Shopping is an increasingly important part of travel plans for many tourists and Sanya shopping tourism has great potential with a new preferential shopping policy for both domestic and foreign travelers contributing a great deal to the local economy.
Parallel to these developments in tourism, the government has started to expand its commercial centers distribution and enrich shopping types in the city.
Currently, the construction of another larger Duty-free Center is speeding up in Haitang Bay. The government is also actively introducing more big-brand projects into the local shopping market.
In 2010, Sanya received a total of 8.33 million overstay tourists, among which overseas tourists were 420,000.
Despite the encouraging predictions for international shopping figures in the year ahead, there are concerns that the shortage of multi-languages qualified salespersons in the shopping tourism sector may reduce actual performance to some extent.
