Minister for Business David Tollner will lead a delegation of local business representatives on a trip to China focusing on investment, tourism and economic opportunities for the Northern Territory.

The delegation will travel for one week to visit various business hubs including Shanghai, Xuzhou and Haikou.

Mr Tollner will attend important meetings with officials of the Chinese Government as well as with high profile members of the Chinese business community.

Meetings have been arranged with representatives from banks, the construction and engineering industry, tourism and airline operators.

Mr Tollner said this was an important opportunity to meet with experts who are experienced in their field and to encourage investment in the Northern Territory.

“It is essential to have strong relationships and ties with our international trade partners for growth into the future,” Mr Tollner said.

“With northern Australia identified as the gateway to Asia, the Territory Government must work closely with our international neighbours.

“China is the world’s fastest growing major economy with growth rates averaging 10 per cent over the past 30 years.

“In 2012, China was the Territory’s second largest export and import market, with exports valued at $1.2 billion and imports valued at $210 million,” Mr Tollner said.
