Sanya Duty Free Store

The implementation of the Hainan Offshore Duty Free policy on April 20 has proved to be an impetus to boost the island tourism economy, reports xinhuanet.com.

As of this August, the Sanya Duty Free Store received 197,000 tourists purchasing items and recorded 580,000 sales.

Driven by the Offshore Duty Free policy, the tourism industry in Hainan has also gained popularity during the off season period.

According to statistics, Hainan has received 6.65 million overstay tourists in the second quarter of this year, up 13.9% over the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the increasing transactions have also lead to the growth of the Hainan import sector. From January to August, the value of duty-free items in total imports hit 62.24 million yuan, an increase of 19.8 times over last year.

Many travel agents are cashing in on the duty-free shopping policy, designing specific travel tours and itineraries based on shopping with bonuses like shopping credits and free drinks to appeal to customers.

The offshore duty-free policy is part of the governments plans to build itself up to become one of the top international tourist destinations. During the May Day holiday, Sanya was the most popular tourist destination among domestic tourists.
