Sanya today is bracing for tropical storm Nock-Ten, which is expected to make landfall near Sanya, on the south eastern coastal region of Hainan Island on Friday night or Saturday morning.
Nock-Ten, which killed at least 31 people in the Philippines, is the eighth storm and the most powerful one to hit China so far this year. As of 10 a.m. Friday, the center of the storm was edging towards southeast off Hainan’s Sanya City. The "Nock-ten" will land in the coastal areas along Sanya to Yangjiang during night of Jul. 29 to morning of Jul.30 with the intensity strengthening gradually.
The storm will continue to move westward at a speed of 18-20 km per hour.
The storm may bring heavy downpours to Hainan and other regions in south China over the next three days, it forecast.
The worst of Nock-Ten’s wind and rain will target southern and eastern Hainan Friday into Saturday. Rainfall of 10 to 15 inches, enough to cause major flooding and landslides, will be possible within 24 to 36 hours.
