Sanya launches ‘Coral Reef Conservation’ campaign on World Oceans Day

In response to the World Oceans Day, which falls on June 8 annually, the Sanya Government, Lingshui County together with Blue Ocean Protection Association, a non-government organization, launched Wednesday a “Coral Reef Conservation” campaign that is aimed to protect the ocean’s ecosystem, reports hinews.cn.
As part of the efforts to protect coral reefs, relevant groups have implanted 2 medium-size artificial coral reef seeds into the offshore sea water of Sanya Bay on June 7.
According to statistics, the existing distribution area of coral reefs in Hainan is more than 20,000 hectares, with about 700 km running along the sea. However, over fishing activity, ocean pollution and climate change in recent years have led to the destruction of the ocean environment, so the survival of coral reefs are facing a serious threat.
In addition to its efforts to protect the coral reefs, the local government and Blue Ocean Protection Association will work together to raise public awareness of marine ecosystem protection in the future.
