The State General Administration of Sport and Sanya Municipal Government announced that Sanya will be one of the stopover ports for the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-2012, reports xinhuenet.com.

The Volvo Ocean Race will start in October of this year at the Spanish port of Alicante and finish in Galway, Ireland in July of 2012.

The course will include stopovers in Cape Town (South Africa), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Sanya (China), Auckland (New Zealand), Itajai (Brazil), Miami (USA), Lisbon (Portugal) and Lorient (France) with a total distance of 70,000 km.
 
To make this race a success, Sanya has been fully preparing for the event. The construction of stopover port in the Luhuitou Bay is expected to be completed in August.
