China to build its 1st tropical marine farm at Wuzhizhou Islet, Sanya
According to the Sanya Marine & Fishery Bureau, planning commissioners have approved a trial marine farm to be developed in Wuzhizhou islet. It is the first tropical marine farm to be set up in China, reports 0898.net.
With a total investment of 20million yuan, the marine farm will be developed in several stages over the coming years. The plan initially allows for 2,000 cubic meters of artificial reefs to be developed in the southwest of Wuzhizhou Islet this year. Large scale supporting facilities will be completed within 3 years.
The development of marine farms will help to transfer the traditional operation of fishing industry and boost the regional economy, especially in Wuzhizhou Islet, bringing additional jobs and investment both in the construction of the farm and its ongoing operation, according to the local fishery authorities.
According to the plan, a total of 8 marine farms will be established in Sanya offshore areas including Dadonghai, East Island, West Islet and Yalong Bay in the future.
