The Hainan government is planning to invest nearly 13 billion yuan between 2013 and 2017 to speed up the expansion of the 2nd phase construction of the Haikou Meilan International Airport.

The expansion project includes a new runway 3,600 meters long and 60 meters wide, two parallel taxiways, a new parking apron accommodating 45 aircraft, a new terminal building covering 290,000 square meters and other supporting facilities.

The existing facilities at the Haikou airport are only capable of handling 8 million passengers a year. With the increasing number of tourists in the last few years, the annual passenger throughput of the airport had grown to 10.16 million by 2011.

After expansion, the airport will be able to serve 300 million passengers, boast a cargo-handling capacity of 300,000 tons and handle 225,000 flights annually
