The Comprehensive Enforcement Bureau of Sanya, Hainan Province, came up, on Monday, with a document titled The Survey on the Removal of the Biggest Shanty Town in Sanya, claiming that there would be endless trouble if compensation is given to the people whose homes were destroyed in the shanty town in Mangguo village. The government said the shanty was a mess: badly managed and at risk of fire accidents and environmental pollution.
The Sanya government official said that they sympathized with the people who used to live in the shanty town, but the fact remains that it is illegal to build homes there. Therefore, if the government gave compensation for houses demolished, other people would be encouraged to build more illegal homes. And, this could create unending problems.
An online post said that the local government of Sanya in Hainan Province had begun to forcibly demolish the biggest shanty clusters in the villages of Mangguo and Xigua in Fenghuang town on January 19. The authorities razed the homes using trucks, bulldozers and other machines leaving the villagers homeless days before the lunar spring festival.
